35th America’s Cup Challenge

Hamilton Island Yacht Club is a famous island of the Whitsundays. It is located at the edge of the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland, Australia. Hamilton Island Yacht Club has challenged the team for 35th America’s Cup. Golden Gate Yacht Club, the Defender and Trustee of the world’s oldest international sporting trophy, accepted the challenge.  Golden Gate Yacht Club’s team ORACLE TEAM USA, owned by Larry Ellison, won the 34th America’s Cup in San Francisco just before the challenge was thrown.
Hamilton Island Yacht Club has established a rich history by earning a dominant position in ocean racing in Australia. It has won Sydney-Hobart races six times out of eight. The famous Australian winemaker and sailing legend Bob Oatley owns the Club. He led a team that also won the last Admiral’s Cup, which is regarded as the world’s highest prize in ocean racing.
Bob Oatley and his son Sandy filed the challenge after ORACLE TEAM USA won the 34th America’s Cup defeating Emirates Team New Zealand on San Francisco Bay.
Oatley expressed pride in Australia’s success in the America’s Cup, the Admiral’s Cup and Olympic yachting and would like to establish its supremacy in the sport’s most prestigious event.
Vice Commodore Ehman expressed that the dates, type of boat, format and rules are subject to negotiation between the Challenger of Record and Defender after consultation with prospective challengers, venues, sponsors and other stakeholders. He also said that both clubs would like to have multiple challengers. This has been the norm since 1970. But first the venue will be decided by the defender under the America’s Cup Deed of Gift.
The challenge between the Australian winemaker and his son, who own the Hamilton Island and the software emperor Larry Ellison's Oracle Team USA for the next America's Cup was announced seconds after the winning American team crossed the finish line in San Francisco Bay.

Oatley and 35th America’s Cup Challenge
Over the years, Oatley has earned considerable wealth and fame as a coffee trader and a vintner. Oatley has been ranked by Forbes as Australia's 25th richest. He bought and started owning Hamilton Island since 2003. He always had nurtured a passion about sailing and thereby made a significant mark in the sailing world as well with his interest and passion for sailing. He possesses a series of super-maxi yachts. This series has been nicknamed Wild Oats. Wild Oats have till date won multiple offshore challenges.

  • The year 2009 saw the opening of Hamilton Island Yacht Club. This was opened by Queensland Premier, the famous Australian politician, Anna Bligh during Hamilton Island Race Week.

Restaurant and Bar
The Bommie Restaurant of the Hamilton Island Yacht Club specializes in fine dining and wine. It has bars and function halls for exclusive use of members and guests. The restaurant offers a la carte menu and can accommodate 90 guests at one time. The Bommie Deck is meant for sunset drinks and offers a relaxed style menu and is open to all island guests and residents. Packaged beer, wine, packaged soft drinks and juice are also served.

Hamilton Island Golf Club
The Hamilton Island Golf Club, the new Championship resort was opened in August 2009. This Golf Club promotes the 18-hole championship. The layout of the course has been designed by the British Open Champion Peter Thomson and the five times British Open champion and Ross Perret. This Golf Club is set amidst the impressive natural beauty of the surrounding hills and escarpments, overlooking the waterways of the Whitsunday Islands. It was opened by Anna Bligh and measures 6,715 yards or 6,140 metres. This golf course is the only championship island golf course in Australia and thereby very unique.

Hamilton Island Golf Club is located at the edge of the Great Barrier Reef. It commands some outstanding views and is set in one of the world’s most beautiful settings. It is Australia's only championship island golf course. The golf course was designed by champion golfer Peter Thomson.
The course elevation combined with other factors such as restricted landing areas and the ever-present breezes poses a pleasant challenge to all kinds of golfers be it professionals or resort guests. The course comprises a series of holes strung along the ridges and played across steep valleys. The par 71, 18-hole course, measuring 6,120 metres or 6692 yards, features two distinctly different nine-hole circuits. The golf course is steeped in the island’s natural and rugged beauty.
