Hamilton Island Yacht Club has established a rich history by earning a dominant position in ocean racing in Australia. It has won Sydney-Hobart races six times out of eight. The famous Australian winemaker and sailing legend Bob Oatley owns the Club. He led a team that also won the last Admiral’s Cup, which is regarded as the world’s highest prize in ocean racing.
Bob Oatley and his son Sandy filed the challenge after ORACLE TEAM USA won the 34th America’s Cup defeating Emirates Team New Zealand on San Francisco Bay.
Oatley expressed pride in Australia’s success in the America’s Cup, the Admiral’s Cup and Olympic yachting and would like to establish its supremacy in the sport’s most prestigious event.
Vice Commodore Ehman expressed that the dates, type of boat, format and rules are subject to negotiation between the Challenger of Record and Defender after consultation with prospective challengers, venues, sponsors and other stakeholders. He also said that both clubs would like to have multiple challengers. This has been the norm since 1970. But first the venue will be decided by the defender under the America’s Cup Deed of Gift.
The challenge between the Australian winemaker and his son, who own the Hamilton Island and the software emperor Larry Ellison's Oracle Team USA for the next America's Cup was announced seconds after the winning American team crossed the finish line in San Francisco Bay.
