How to reach Hamilton Island

Hamilton Island is located 16 kilometres from the Queensland, Australia. It is a part of the group of islands known as Whitsunday Islands on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef. Hamilton Island is the only Whitsundays Island to own a commercial airport. The island enjoys direct flights daily from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Cairns. The service providers include Jetstar, Virgin Blue and Qantas. The island can also be reached through regional chartered flights from locations such as Mackay, Proserpine and Airlie Beach. It also receives a lot of ferries operating from Shute Harbour. Yachts too sail from other islands and find a welcome haven here. You can also reach the island via locally operated helicopters, light planes and seaplanes.

Hamilton Island Airport is also known as Great Barrier Reef Airport. It is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reefs and the pristine sandy beaches of Whitsundays. Hamilton Island Airport is located south of the Marina and is just about five minutes away from the resorts.
By train or coach Hamilton Island can be reached in various different ways. Brisbane, Townsville or Cairns run coaches till Airlie Beach. There exists a short local coach trip from Shute Harbour’s ferry jetty. The Sunlander train that runs four times a week from Brisbane and Cairns to Proserpine has coach connections to Shute Harbour and the Hamilton Island ferry.

Brisbane is 1100 kilometres drive from Shute Harbour and takes around 12 hours of continuous journey. Shute Harbour provides secure parking near the ferry jetty.
