Hamilton Island Golf Club is located at the edge of the Great Barrier Reef. It commands some outstanding views and is set in one of the world’s most beautiful settings. It is Australia's only championship island golf course. The golf course was designed by champion golfer Peter Thomson.
The course elevation combined with other factors such as restricted landing areas and the ever-present breezes poses a pleasant challenge to all kinds of golfers be it professionals or resort guests. The course comprises a series of holes strung along the ridges and played across steep valleys. The par 71, 18-hole course, measuring 6,120 metres or 6692 yards, features two distinctly different nine-hole circuits. The course ultimately leads back to the clubhouse but through its journey presents some unparalleled panoramic views of Dent Passage and Hamilton Island. The golf course is steeped in the island’s natural and rugged beauty. The undulating terrain offers some extraordinary views of the coves and beaches to the vast expanses of sea and sand spread far and wide across.
Environmental Initiatives by the Golf Club
Hamilton Island Golf Club is strongly committed towards preserving the nature and its pristine beauty. It is a responsible custodian of the world’s largest protected marine area, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
Golf Club is a part of the Hamilton Island Enterprises Limited. It takes part in the “Eye on the Reef” program. This program is a collaboration of 40 marine tourism operators. Reports are prepared on the basis of the data collected on the health of the Great Barrier Reef.
The ecosystem surrounding the Hamilton Island Golf Club is considered fragile. The planning and construction needed a lot of planning to leave the ecosystem undisturbed. The construction methods and erection techniques selected were sophisticated. The building design chosen and the guidelines and regulations were followed rigorously to ensure that the impact on the environment is minimised.
Certain steps that were taken to ensure minimum disturbance to the environment are as follows:
The Hamilton Island Golf Club is accessible only by ferry from Hamilton Island. Thus the tee-off times are coordinated keeping in mind the golf ferry timetables. The transportation to Dent Island requires some extra time and thus for a game of 18 holes the time required should be 5 hours and for 9-hole game it would be around 2.5 hours. Caddie service is hired to familiarize the guest with the complexities and subtleties of the Hamilton Island Golf Club. Moreover, the caddy helps in planning lines off tees and into greens and how to make the best use of the land elevations and the winds.

Certain steps that were taken to ensure minimum disturbance to the environment are as follows:
- The golf holes are designed is such a way that the natural blends with the man-made efforts.
- The natural gradient of the slopes have been maintained as it is so as not to disturb the soil formation.
- Provisions are made to capture the silt that might run off so that it does not enter the water.
- The gardens mostly contain indigenous species. Also the practice of recycling garden waste is another way to conserve water.
- The use of fans and natural lights are encouraged as against air conditioners.
- The golf buggies are driven by electricity to prevent air pollution.
- Tourists and guests are instructed against feeding wild animals.
- The state-of-the-art sewage treatment facilities ensure that the effluents are treated to be reused for irrigating parks and gardens.
