Hamilton Island is situated in the tropical zone and suffers from mosquito infestation. The rains coupled with the tropical cyclones increase the problem. Mosquito borne diseases such as Ross River fever, encephalitis and dengue fever have been reported. It is advisable that you wear long length trousers and full sleeve shirts and use mosquito repellents over all exposed surfaces of your body to protect yourself from mosquito bites.

Danger of getting bitten by Irukandji Jellyfish
The Whitsunday tropical waters contain Irukandji Jellyfish. These jellyfishes can be seen in increased numbers in the warm ocean waters. As are most jellyfishes, these are small and transparent creatures. Getting bitten may lead to a feeling of stinging sensation, severe pain, muscle contractions and probably a bit of breathing difficulties too. Visitors are therefore advised to restrict their swimming pleasures to the pool waters and avoid the warm ocean waters.

Tropical cyclones can be a menace to unaware tourists

In case there is such a weather prediction do not venture outdoors and never out into the sea. Tropical cyclones are most prevalent during the wet months starting from January to April. Stay away from stray wild animals
While you are out venturing into the island all by yourself, in case you spot any wild animal do not venture close to it or attempt to touch it or feed it or thwart it in any way. If confronted these animals, however small, can be quite dangerous and harm you or bite you. People have had some bitter experience while trying to be extra friendly with wild creatures such as Goanna roaming  in the countryside.

Golf buggies form the main transport medium on the island. They are good is covering distances but have been reported to be unsafe. Please also keep in mind that drivers are not covered under this insurance. Also, the golf buggies are not covered for damages. So in case of damage, the people who hire the buggies need to compensate in full.

Coackatoos living in the island can be a menace
The cockatoos are always in search of food. And sometimes they dare to barge into the dining halls and restaurants to snatch morsels. It is advisable for the tourists not to leave doors and windows open when not in room. Also these birds are known to scratch through door screens to get into the room and can snatch away snacks and other eatables. Visitors are warned to keep the screen of doors and glass doors locked. Tourists might find them cute but they can be a real menace. Some restaurants provide perspex covers for outdoor diners to protect their food just in case they have to leave their food on the table unattended.
