Recent Developments in the Hamilton Island

Hamilton Island saw two major key infrastructural and tourism developments in the year 2009:

  • The year 2009 saw the opening of Hamilton Island Yacht Club. This was opened by Queensland Premier, the famous Australian politician, Anna Bligh during Hamilton Island Race Week.
  • The Hamilton Island Golf Club, the new Championship resort was also opened in August 2009. This was also opened by Anna Bligh.

The Yacht Club has been designed by the renowned architect Walter Barda. Its architecture reflects a distinctive and authentic Australian style. It has been designed with passion to create a distinctive identity in the domestic and international architectural landscape to give Hamilton Island the face of a sailor’s pilgrimage.
Some of the features of designing that stand out and makes this building remarkable are as follows:

  • Aquamarine leaves
  • Patina copper roof

  • Roof shape inspired by the soaring sails

Yacht Club Villas
The Yacht Club Villas are an epitome of luxury, beauty and sophistication. There are 35 standalone exquisite villas constructed out of natural timber and are priced at 2.9million dollars onwards.  The villas are laid at four levels commanding the views of Dent Passage, Whitsunday Passage and the mainland. The landscaping was planned by internationally known landscape artist Jamie Durie.

Sailing and yachting 
Hamilton Island Yacht Club has a significant name and fame in the history of sailing and yachting. It is the gateway to the world’s greatest sailing avenues. It is the home of Audi Hamilton Island Race week. This is a spectacular event famous worldwide in which viewers and yacht sailors from all across the world flock in for this gala Australian largest offshore keelboat regatta.

Yacht Club member facilities
The yacht Club offers exclusive privileges to the select few who become members. There is a private dining room that serves breakfast, lunch or dinner on request. A la carte menus can be ordered to suit preferences. There is also an exclusive library catering to members. Here the guests can sit back in a lounge with their favourite book and order light snacks and enjoy wireless Internet connection facilities. Members also have access to an exclusive gym, sauna and pool.

Conference facilities at the Hamilton Island Yacht Club 
The Hamilton Island Yacht Club provides state-of-the-art conference facilities in a world-class ambience overlooking the turquoise blue waters of Dent Passage. The Yacht Club Auditorium can accommodate up to 66 guests and has a gallery type seating arrangement. The Ketch and Cutter rooms, identified for conferences, product launches, tradeshows and dinner events sport high ceilings, natural light in a backdrop of Dent Passage and Hamilton Island Golf Club. Moreover, the Flag Deck holds cocktail parties the Barnacle Room is meant for small groups.

Restaurant and Bar
The Bommie Restaurant of the Hamilton Island Yacht Club specializes in fine dining and wine. It has bars and function halls for exclusive use of members and guests. The restaurant offers a la carte menu and can accommodate 90 guests at one time. The Bommie Deck is meant for sunset drinks and offers a relaxed style menu and is open to all island guests and residents. Packaged beer, wine, packaged soft drinks and juice are also served.

Hamilton Island Golf Club
The Hamilton Island Golf Club, the new Championship resort was opened in August 2009. This Golf Club promotes the 18-hole championship. The layout of the course has been designed by the British Open Champion Peter Thomson and the five times British Open champion and Ross Perret. This Golf Club is set amidst the impressive natural beauty of the surrounding hills and escarpments, overlooking the waterways of the Whitsunday Islands. It was opened by Anna Bligh and measures 6,715 yards or 6,140 metres. This golf course is the only championship island golf course in Australia and thereby very unique.

Hamilton Island Golf Club is located at the edge of the Great Barrier Reef. It commands some outstanding views and is set in one of the world’s most beautiful settings. It is Australia's only championship island golf course. The golf course was designed by champion golfer Peter Thomson.
The course elevation combined with other factors such as restricted landing areas and the ever-present breezes poses a pleasant challenge to all kinds of golfers be it professionals or resort guests. The course comprises a series of holes strung along the ridges and played across steep valleys. The par 71, 18-hole course, measuring 6,120 metres or 6692 yards, features two distinctly different nine-hole circuits. The course ultimately leads back to the clubhouse but through its journey presents some unparalleled panoramic views of Dent Passage and Hamilton Island. The golf course is steeped in the island’s natural and rugged beauty. The undulating terrain offers some extraordinary views of the coves and beaches to the vast expanses of sea and sand spread far and wide across.
