In Queensland, Australia, there is a group of islands known as Whitsunday Islands. They are a collection of continental islands and are of various sizes and shapes. It is believed that Hamilton Island in the same way as the other islands of the collection was formed due to rising sea levels. Hamilton Island has gained additional popularity by being featured in two famous movies Muriel’s Wedding and Fool’s Gold. It is also famous because of hosting the Hamilton Island Race Week yachting festival, which is a major festival among various other exciting festivals celebrated on this island.
Hamilton Island is a unique combination of fabulous beaches, exotic coral reefs, diverse flora and fauna, fine drinking and food options and a milieu of adrenalin pumping as well as relaxing activities. Thus it caters to all types of tourists. History of Hamilton Island
The island is known to have been bought in the year 1975. Keith Williams and Bryan Byrt had purchased it. Construction work was initiated three years later in 1978 by Keith Williams. Hamilton Island Harbour was the first ever construction on the island. Soon after that the resort complex was built.
The island resort complex was inaugurated in phases. It took nearly two years from 1982 to 1984 for the whole resort to be opened to the public. Unfortunately, in the year 1985 most of the central wing of the resort complex was burnt down and then restoration work continued till 1986 when the whole resort became functional.
The present day Whitsunday Holiday Apartments started functioning in the year 1986. This was then followed by the opening of the Reef View Hotel in 1990. In 1992, the resort was known to have been in receivership. BT Australia owned the resorts through the years from 1995 to 2003. Holiday Inn managed it during this tenure.
The year 1999 saw the opening of the exclusive five-star Beach Club. Expansion was carried out and modifications for the better were introduced by the Oatley family when it acquired the resort in 2003. Among the innovation expansion schemes were included an expanded Marina precinct, a yacht club and a luxury resort known as qualia. qualia, however, was opened to tourists only during the years 2007-2008.
